Daina & Brian

Please enjoy this little guest post from Daina of New York State of Mind.

Hello everyone! My name is Daina, from New York State of Mind, and I am so excited to share my love story with you all while Danielle is off honeymooning with her man!

You see, I am head over heels in love with a man named Brian.

Brian and I met in the fall of 2005 at a restaurant we both worked at. He was a server, I was a bartender and I had the biggest school girl crush on him. Every time he sent a drink ticket to the service bar, I made sure to be the one to make it. And if there was a line of tickets, you better believe his was taken care of first! We casually talked at work for months, but that was all.

That December, I learned that I would be the bartender who worked both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. I was heartbroken. I had never missed the holiday with my family back home in Minnesota and was really sad that instead, I would be sitting alone in my studio apartment after spending the holiday with strangers at the bar (insert Debbie Downer wah-wah here). Luckily, the events of December 23rd changed my outlook about the holiday and all that was to come.

Our love story officially began with a tree and a city stroll...

The night before Christmas Eve, I planned on walking over to the tree at Rockefeller Center after work before heading home for the night. I just so happened to be finishing work at the same time Brian was. As soon as I stepped outside and made it to the sidewalk, I heard someone yell, "Daina, wait up!" I turned around and saw Brian walking towards me. He asked what my plans were for the rest of the evening and when I mentioned walking to the tree, he asked if he could come along. I, of course, said yes, and had butterflies in my stomach the entire walk there. We stood and talked about anything and everything for almost an hour as we watched skaters circle the rink under the tree. Then, we slowly walked up Fifth Avenue admiring the Christmas decorations and continuing our conversation. We made our way to Central Park and walked through the park for a few more minutes before Brian stopped, looked into my eyes and kissed me. He kissed me!

Looking back on that night, it is hard to remember exactly what we talked about or how the events unfolded. But, I do remember feeling so excited and so comfortable. It was just meant to be. I knew then that Brian was the man I was supposed to love. And I have fallen more and more in love with him ever since. Here are just a handful of the reasons why I am so in love with Brian...

He is romantic. After almost six years together, Brian still surprises with me flowers, home cooked meals, post-it note love letters and real mail. He is a romantic and I will forever be grateful for the things he does that make my heart skip a beat.

He can always make me laugh. Brian is constantly cracking jokes, and although I make fun of most of them, they always make me laugh. He can always make me smile.

He is supportive. Brian helped me survive my undergraduate and Master's degrees at NYU and my first few years of teaching. It is so nice to have someone who encourages me, calms me down, and makes sure I have plenty of good food and coffee during my most stressful times.

He is a kid at heart. Just look at him going down that slide. That was not posed. I love that Brian brings joy to everything he does.

He loves to travel. And he is one heck of a travel companion. Brian and I have been on so many adventures together, and we have such a good time wherever we go. We love going on road trips to Boston, wandering through cities in Maine, and spending lazy days at the beach in Florida.

He is an amazing father. I am so grateful that I get to spend time with Brian and his daughter Emily, and it warms my heart to see what a wonderful father he is to her. We like to spend afternoons at the Central Park Zoo, evenings watching movies and ordering pizza, and weeks during the summer in Maine.

He made a sports fan out of me. Before I was with Brian, I didn't really care about sports. I listened to others' conversations during each sports season, but was never able to chime in and cheer for my team. That all changed when I started dating my Boston man. I am now a big Red Sox, Bruins, and Pats fan and love watching games with Brian.

He is an amazing cook. Brian knows his way around the kitchen and loves creating new and healthy recipes. I always tell him that my apartment feels like a restaurant; I am so spoiled with his home cooked meals. His creations are always amazing!
