David and Jennifer Stein, Majesty in Motion
I love hearing how other couples met and fell in love on the salsa scene, but it's kinda hard to listen to people's stories when the music is blasting at a social. That's one of the things I love about Salsa Sundays...being able to read these love stories without interruption (or an elbow to the head).

I suggest sitting in a quiet place to read and enjoy this week's interview with yet another MARRIED professional salsa couple!

David and Jennifer Stein live in San Diego with their little girl, Leah, and run Majesty in Motion, the largest dance company in the area. Here's how their "for real" family and dance family got started...

Me: How did you meet your David?

Jenn: I met David at Cafe Sevilla in San Diego. I was visiting my girlfriend who was the bartender there and I had no idea it was salsa night. He was so mysterious, standing by himself. I tried so many times to get his attention, but he didn't give me the time of day! Then saw him dance...I was so amazed. After the dance, I bought him a drink and he offered my girlfriend and me a private lesson! I took him up on his offer the very next day! We spent the whole day together and have been together ever since.

Me: When did he ask you to marry him?

Jenn: In Hawaii while on a family vacation, about two years after we met. He asked me while we were walking alone on the beach. It was so memorable!

Me: What song did you dance to at your wedding?

Jenn: We danced to "My Girl" by The Temptations and nothing was choreographed. It wasn't salsa, but of course we did salsa dance with our friends a lot later in the night.

Me: When did you decide to go into business together?

Jenn: I worked full-time in Human Resources for many years. When I started getting more involved in salsa dancing, David asked me to help him teach his classes part-time. Shortly after we got married, my contract position was eliminated...that's when I started to teach full-time. At that time, we had three teams. We now 5 partner teams and 3 ladies teams (Royal Elegance).

Me: How do you separate your personal and professional lives?

Jenn: We teach separately most of the time; he has his own classes and students, as do I. I'll be honest though, we do talk about our dance company most of the time; however, we do have a beautiful daughter, Leah, who we come home to. One look at her makes us "feel the love" IMMEDIATELY and it keeps us grounded. Free time is rare, but when we do have some time, we spend it with Leah at the beach or park.

Me: Do you always travel together?

Jenn: We do travel together. David traveled alone a couple of times while I was pregnant (and shortly after I had Leah), but the distance is good once in awhile. Time apart is good, too. David skateboards a lot on his free time and I enjoy working out or doing yoga. We both love time together, but "me" time is just as important. With our busy schedule, it doesn't come as often as I'd like, but we do our best.

Me: Where does Leah stay when you're out of town?

Jenn: Leah stays with David's mom most of the time, but we take her with us at any chance we get! It's good for her to know what we do so she understands our lifestyle. While she's at grandma's house, it's okay with us. She loves going to her house so it keeps me at ease. We work a lot, but it's all for Leah. She motivates us everyday.

Me: What is it like dancing with your husband?

Jenn: It's pure perfection! David is an amazing dancer, teacher and choreographer. I feel so lucky to have a partner like him.

Me: What is your favorite thing about dancing with David?

Jenn: There are so many things I can say about David, but the one thing that stands out is we have seen the world together. We have traveled to so many places in the world teaching and performing...that's my favorite thing.

Me: How do you think dancing keeps your family together?

Jenn: We love dance. It's our living, but it's not what keeps us together. We share a lot of other things that keep our family together, music being one of them (we both love hip-hop from our era). We also love San Diego and all it has to offer: lovely weather, beaches, parks, friends and family!

A BIG thank you to Jenn Stein for taking time out of her busy schedule to answer some questions for us. Check out Majesty in Motion's website for more details on their class schedule and workshop information.

There are a ton of awesome videos on there, too, but none as amazing as the one I'm about to show you. Take a gander at David and Jennifer social dancing to  Cuando Te Vea off of Bobby Valentin's 1974 album, Rey Del Bajo.

I'm pretty sure you know what I'm about to say now, but I'm going to say it anyway...if you are part of a "real life" salsa couple (or know someone who is) and would like to be featured on Salsa Sunday, holla. Here's the video. Baila, mi gente! Te veo pronto.
