Hello, Diva In Training Designs

Well, my dear friends, I'm pleased to announce that my little blog has confirmed its first sponsor! I'm hoping to have a couple more within the next few weeks which is just so ridiculously exciting! I don't know if you realize it, but this is awesome news for YOU! Most of these folks are willing to share deep discounts for their products and services with our readers just because y'all are fantastic. Some, like our new friends at Diva in Training Designs, are even willing to give stuff away! Keep checking into the blog for new contests and giveaways.

Shauna L. Howard, Fiber Artist
Anyhoot, on to the main event! I'd like to introduce you to my good friend and owner of Diva in Training Designs, Miss Shauna L. Howard!

Shauna and I became friends in the Philadelphia salsa scene, but it was on Facebook that I learned about her passion for crocheting. About six months ago, she posted a picture of these ridiculously cute slippers as her profile picture. I needed them in my life that very moment, so I asked her where I could buy a pair. It was then that she told me she made them herself and that she had just opened a store on Etsy.

I ended up buying a pair of slippers from Shauna and I totally LOVE THEM! Her Etsy store has grown quite a bit since then which is why she's here at Danfredo Rivera. I know y'all are going to check out her store, but before you do, I wanted you to get to know this lovely lady a little better. Ladies and gentleman, I hope you enjoy this little Q&A with Miss Shauna L. Howard!

Me: What got you into crocheting?

Shauna: I began crocheting when I was a little girl at my MaDear’s house on Saturdays in North Carolina. While my dad would do her yard work, she and I would stay inside and crochet. Eventually, she developed Alzheimer’s disease: each time I would visit with her, she would teach me the same beginner stitches over and over again as if it was the first time. Eventually, I became very fast at creating simple items!

Me: Why did you decide to start your own business?

Shauna: When I was at Temple University, I had a part-time job where I called music alumni and asked for donations for three hours every evening. To pass the time, I brought in my yarn and needles to crochet. At first, I started creating items just for myself, but then my co-workers would purchase all my items. Eventually, one of my co-workers (a finance/entrepreneur major) suggested that I open a business. My mother introduced me to Etsy.com (she owned 3 consignment shops when I was a child). I studied classical voice & opera at Temple University; therefore, I opened my business and named it Diva-In-Training Designs!

Me: How would you describe your store's style?

Shauna: Wow…such a hard thing to describe!! Well, considering that I would wear everything that I create, I would have to answer the question by describing my personal style. How about…simple Bohemian chic?!?! I’m from North Carolina originally, so I create all of my fall/winter accessories with warmth in mind. After almost a decade of living in the north, I still haven’t gotten used to the cold winters, so each item is designed to keep you warm and fashionably trendy!

Me: What are some "must have" pieces from your collection?

The Urban Furry Legwarmers are an absolute must-have! Handmade leg warmers created to cover your leg or your boots. Just slide them over your leg and secure them around the heel. One size fits all: two adjustable buttons on the top and bottom to secure them in place! Warning: increased haters, popularity and traffic jams may occur while wearing.

The Kareem is an infinity scarf made from the softest, premium yarn in my studio. An infinity scarf is, well, think of it as an endless loop of fashionable bliss. It’s trendy, sophisticated, super stylish and so very versatile. The infinity or circular scarf is much like a traditional scarf, but with no end-a circular scarf that can be looped around the neck once, twice or multiple times. Having one loop of scarf rather than two ends gives a cleaner, neater look and removes the confusion on what the heck to do with those scarf tails!
For those who are eco-conscious, I have accessories made from eco-friendly materials, such as soap savers, face scrubbies, etc. Shayne's Vegan Scarf is a perfect example: the yarn is made from 80% of our simply soft acrylic fiber and 20% of a specially processed polyester fiber produced from recycled plastic bottles. The recycled plastic bottles are thoroughly cleaned and refined, a process that completely removes any residue from the plastic bottles. This assures a fresh, clean yarn. This scarf is soft to the touch, easy to work with and environmentally friendly.

Me: If someone emails you with a vision for a piece, can you create it?

Shauna: Absolutely! Between you and me, over 30% of my items are items that were envisioned by others. For example, a former classmate sent me a picture of this hat and with her input, I designed the Autumn Leaves Beret with Large Bow. She loved it!

Me: How can our readers order from Diva-In-Training?

How much I need them?! Okay, here goes a sob story.

I constantly have to wear something on my feet, thanks to my lovely fracture and constant foot pain, my barefoot days [I so loved those days] are now over.

Searching for cute slippers I can wear at all times at home is next to impossible. But these could be it!

INEEDTHESEINMYLIFE!!! My feet and back KILL me after long hours working at the Nursing home as a CNA. I'm under payed, I deal with ungrateful nurses (some of them), and force myself to keep a smile on my face while doing all of the dirty things. The highlight of my day is heading home and putting on my slippers, but sadly my bootleg pink crocs are failing me and I desperately need a new pair. THESEWOULDBEPERFECT! happy feet = happy girl, Happy girl = happy resident. So Roz + NEWAMAZINGCUTESLIPPERS = a community service. Think of the elderly.

If that didn't work then....
